Curriculum Vitae

Renato D'Alençon Castrillón has been a researcher and lecturer at the Habitat Unit since 2011, and was a guest lecturer between 2008 and 2011. He graduated as an architect from the P. Universidad Católica de Chile, and received a Master of Architecture from Cornell University. He was awarded a Fulbright Grant from 2002 – 2004 to pursue his master's and a Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst grant to pursue a PhD Degree in the Technische Universität Berlin, starting 2008. He has taught Design Studios and Building Technology at the Universidad Católica de Chile and has been Guest Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, at the University of Chile and at the Technical University of Berlin, where he currently teaches design studios and research seminars.

His field of scholarly work includes environmental design and performance of buildings. These areas were the focus of his book 'Acondicionamientos' (Ediciones ARQ, Santiago 2008) as well as several articles. The recovery and development of heritage building systems, an area which was the focus of the book 'Eingewanderte Baumeister' (DOM Publishers, Berlin 2013) and a number of other published were the product of his research in the field of construction history and the project Reclaiming Heritage. Habitability in social housing and informal settlements is an area in which he has published several articles, including 'Habitability Parameters and Standards in Dwellings: Contesting technical objectivity in the context of slum management and housing provision in Chile' (In: Alfaro et.al Eds. Lateiname Lateinamerikanische Städte im Wandel. Berlin: Lit Verlag, 2011).

He is a founding member of RedINVECA, Network of Chilean Researchers in Germany; a member of HCS, History of Construction Society: and member of WSSET, World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies.
