Perto de Lá <> Near from thereSelf-organized spatial production in Berlin and Salvador (Brazil)

How can collective and self-organized practice be a form of resistance? How can reuse and recovery of buildings resist the logic of mateiral extraction, consumption and waste undergirding the production of the city?

From September 18 to 27, the summer school Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne will bring together up to 12 participants with 12 visiting architects and artists from Salvador, Brazil, to address practices of space reclamation, self-organization, co-production, and social artistic practice between two cities. The summer school comprises four days of visits and debates on sites of citizen spatial production in Berlin: Floating University, Make-up, Haus der Statistik, Operation Himmelblick, and Falscher Fisch, as well as an input from Urbane Praxis e. V. We will hear from their organizers and founders and raise questions about advantages and shortcomings of their different ways of claiming and producing space. Through two panels shared by Salvador architects and guest practitioners from Berlin, we will learn about he practices of TANTO, a creative architecture office, and Arquivo Reuso, an office for the restoration of old architecture and reuse of construction materials in Salvador.

At the center of the summer school are workshops on collective working strategies and repair in the social-architectural field. The seminar will expand participants’ understanding of spatial practice in the non-European environment of Salvador, and foster skills in spatial design centered on users, recovery and the protection of social values.
Perto de Lá <> Nahe Ferne is a collaboration with Make-up e.V. (Berlin) and Projeto Ativa (Salvador).
