Body-Space III
Collective Publishing as Spatial Practice

This seminar approaches publishing as a collective, embodied, and spatial practice for building shared knowledge on urban issues. We invite participants to explore how editorial work can operate as a collective device for investigating embodied and situated spatial negotiations. The seminar is organized around “BodySpace Magazine: Issue #01 Home(un)making”, a publication exploring how individuals navigate dis/re-placement in the face of migration, trans* bodily transition, post-socialist transformation, and political exile in Berlin. The project draws on a relational understanding of space alongside feminist, queer, and critical race scholarship, as well as the past year of the group’s empirical inquiry. Bringing together narrative essays, pictures, a game, mappings, collages, drawings, and poetic fragments, the magazine questions dominant imaginaries of home as a stable domestic enclosure. Publishing becomes a way of assembling stories and images that trace how dwelling is negotiated across time, bodies, and everyday urban life in the face of socio-spatial inequalities.

The seminar unfolds through four encounters. In the introductory session, we will reflect on the magazine as a collaborative pedagogical device and discuss collective editorial practice. Three subsequent sessions activate the gestures explored in the publication: anchoring, connecting, and reorienting. Anchoring takes the form of collective reading situations that gather participants around memory and returns. Connecting activates a playful exercise for reflecting on shared recognition. Reorienting unfolds through a walk, where texts and images accompany participants, opening questions about how different grounds for inhabiting space might be built. Working through reading, play, and movement, the seminar understands the territory as a field of spatial negotiation and editorial experimentation, inviting reflection on collective ways of producing knowledge on home(un)making.
