URBAN TALK
October 28, 2015 | 18.00 Uhr | Halle 2
Valentina Karga
Introduction to practices of the Commons and self-sufficiency
Valentina Karga, born in Chalkidiki, Greece, is an artist based in Berlin. After she got her masters in architecture from the University of Thessaly, she has been a fellow at the Graduate school, University of the Arts Berlin (UdK). Valentina’s projects encourage engagement and participation, facilitate practices of commoning and are concerned with sustainability. Sometimes, together with the participants, through dialogue and building prototypes in a DIY manner, they end up imagining alternatives for societal structures, such as economic and pedagogic institutions. Among her projects is the “Summer school for Applied Autonomy” in Berlin, a research initiative interested in capturing the technical know-how but also the social, political and affective aspects involved in autonomous living. She is also a founding member of Collective Disaster. She has shown her work at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, the Athens Biennial and in a major exhibition curated by Whitechapel Gallery. Together with her collaborator, Pieterjan Grandry, they have been awarded the Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research 2015, for the development of a new project, Market for Immaterial Value.
This Urban Talk is part of a series of three evening lectures that were organised in the framework of the Habitat Unit Design Studios 'Rural+' and 'Refugee City' during winter semester 2015/2016.
