(Un)making the city: Pedro Alban and Co-Making Matters in conversation

Pedro Alban is a visual artist and architect. His research focuses on the practical and subjective processes of construction: material flows, ecological implications, and questions of memory. The experience of being the last person to enter buildings before they cease to exist, becoming the final barrier between salvage and disposal, drives his most recent artistic production. He has participated in the Architecture Biennale of São Paulo (2019, 2022) and was a finalist of the Ibero-American Architecture Biennial (2022). From 2017 to 2022, he was a member of the Mouraria 53 collective, which occupied and renovated a ruin in the historic center of Salvador using materials recovered from more than 60 demolitions throughout the city. Since 2020, together with Natália Lessa and Fernanda Veiga, he has coordinated Arquivo, a project dedicated to facilitating and popularizing the reuse of materials in architecture.

Co-Making Matters is a multidisciplinary platform based at Haus der Statistik that fosters collaboration across artistic, social, and urban practices. Co-Making Matters is committed to investigating and developing methodologies of collaboration. Rooted in the context of Haus der Statistik, the platform engages with the site's socio-political, historical, and spatial dynamics. It emphasizes social responsibility, environmental justice, and shared agency, while actively promoting the circulation and sharing of resources.
