Livelihood and Rehabilitation of Slums in Greater Cairo: The Development and Evaluation Process from the Livelihood Perspective

This research is geared towards contributing to the wide field of slum development. It focuses on the rehabilitation process of slums and the problems associated with the risks the inhabitants face, the loss of livelihood capitals and the factors that control these losses.

It looks particularly at instances when inhabitants face reallocation to new environments and then return to the original areas after a certain amount of time having going through different phases or remaining permanently in the new location. Livelihood capitals are lost in projects established for the inhabitants of slums and hardly regained. This research focuses on analysing the processes of different rehabilitation projects in the case study of Cairo, as well as followed strategies and interventions, how they effect on the livelihood of inhabitants and what are the strategies followed by the inhabitants in each case study to regain their lost livelihood capitals. A new approach to dealing with such projects can be conducted and followed, which can help maintain the sustainability and improve the conditions and the livelihood of the inhabitants and the urbanity they live in.

The doctoral thesis is funded by German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
