Brave New Alps
COMUNfARE  making rural economies in common

Brave New Alps are Bianca Elzenbaumer and Fabio Franz. Currently based between Italy and the UK, they produce design projects that engage people in discussing and rethinking social, political and environmental issues. In their projects they combine design research methods with radical pedagogy, conflict mediation techniques and DIY making. Currently, they are developing a participatory action research project in the Italian Alps - the area they grew up in - that experiments with how designers and architects can contribute to sustain and develop economies that contribute to progressive social change in rural areas. The framework they work with is informed by feminist approaches to more-than-human community economies and autonomist Marxist definitions of the commons.

Bianca works as a Research Fellow at Leeds College of Art, while Fabio is developing a practice-based PhD at the Sheffield School of Architecture. Bianca holds a PhD from Goldsmiths, University of London, and they both graduated from the MA in Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art in 2010.
