Do-It-Yourself Urbanism:
Emerging Practices
from Paris & Berlin

The architecture field sees new types of practice emerging, mostly in the form of collectives, associations and non-profit organisations. Their mode of operation deliberately questions the conventions of the construction industry, the opaque rigidities of planning departments, and the hierarchies of private design firms. How? By negotiating access to public space, deviating the dreadfully wasteful cycles of construction materials, and involving non-professionals in the process –activists, local communities, minorities, youth. It is a far-reaching game that aims to shift the paradigm towards inclusive, democratic, agile urbanism.

Form Follows Aktion is a French-German cooperation project geared to the reinforcement of a transnational network of architecture collectives, urban activists and artists. The group has been commissioned to design and build the summer 2017 installation and exhibition at the Cité de la Mode & Design in Paris, under the overarching theme of togetherness (#Ensemble). They are also organising an experimental architecture festival at ZK/U in Berlin, following Bellastock‘s well-known festivals organised in Paris since 2006.
