Short courses

All short courses are tailormade and are offered on request. Themes, time and venue of each course will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Requests specifying the subjects to be addressed shall be made at least 6 months prior to the intended start. Tuition fees are calculated individually for each course and in addition will have to cover travel expenses as well as the living costs. Tailor-made courses are also organized in the home countries of participants.

Short Courses are offered in cooperation with development organizations including the GTZ and inWent (Internationale Weiterbildung und Entwicklung GmbH), or are made on request.

Target group: High-level professionals and decision makers

_Our Short Courses are targeted at senior administrators, executives from private sector institutions, NGOs, as well as politicians from local or national governments. The objective is to provide them with an overview on state-of-the-art techniques in specific fields of urban management, environmental management and environmental engineering and thereby contribute to capacity building on strategic and policy-making levels.

Strategic knowledge about new solutions

_Typically members of this group of high-level professionals are interested in an overview on state-of-the-art solutions and strategic knowledge about new tools for a better urban management rather than detailed and operational know-how. They are achievement-oriented but lack access to information about new themes, techniques and tools. Their positions will not allow long vacancies, and they therefore will not be able to spend more than one month abroad. However, members of this group typically play key roles as agents of change in their own administrative environment and many of them are official partners in development projects supported by international agencies.

Comparative approach

_Each course provides cross-country comparative information about successful solutions for one typical problem. The contents are of strategic relevance, based on practical experience and respond to core problems in the cities of the developing world. Tailor-made courses responding to the needs of specific organizations or projects are also offered.

Inter-active learning

_The courses apply inter-active methods of teaching such as workshops and group work and they will draw on case-study material. For the recruitment of participants and the organization of the courses the TU Berlin cooperates with its international partner institutions and development organisations. The language of the courses depends on the participants. So far, short courses have been carried out in English, German, Spanish, Portuguese and often with translation, especially into Chinese.
