The Urban Management Program

The Urban Management Program

_In most countries the development of human resources has not kept pace with the challenges of urbanization. This has led to an increasing demand for specialized training for administrators, decision makers and planners.

In response to this demand the Berlin University of Technology, Faculty VI, offers training programs on specific aspects of urban management for foreign experts. Two types of courses are offered: A Master Course in Urban Management for graduates from various disciplines, which started in the fall of 2005, and Short Courses on specific aspects of urban management for senior local and central government staff.

_The courses offer a wide range of expertise in various disciplines. Many of the teachers and researchers at the TU Berlin, have longstanding experience as consultants to international and/or bi-lateral development organizations. Experts from other institutions and the private sector with an international reputation in their respective fields are also involved, in order to offer country-specific knowledge and allow for international comparisons.

Cross-country Learning and Global Networking

_Beyond the immediate effect of training decision-makers and thereby improving the human resource base for creating better environments in cities, the Berlin University of Technology creates a platform for sharing experience in key areas of urban development with other concerned institutions. This will not only benefit the participants and graduates from the courses but also contribute to international learning and exchange in an increasingly globalized academic community.

_In addition to regular courses, cross-country learning and the exchange of experiences from various regions of the world is further facilitated by offering a platform for international conferences, meetings and workshops involving both government and non-government institutions.
_In the medium term it is intended to further develop and diversify the program through a global network involving partner universities from Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.

The City of Berlin as a Hub of Learning in Central Europe

_At the same time the program provides access to urban management practices in German cities, including Berlin. The city of Berlin has undergone far-reaching changes in the aftermath of the re-unification of the country. Through its location and history the German capital is a major hub for learning as well as economic and cultural development in Central and Eastern Europe.
